Along the coast of the Sinis it’s possible to practice kitesurfing all year round, without crowds. There are many spots to choose from all of which vary according to the quality/intensity of the wind, the size and quality of the wave and a wind surfer’s skill level. The predominant wind is the Mistral from the North West, side-on.
San Giovanni di Sinis
At the southern most tip of the Sinis peninsula lies the characteristic village of San Giovanni di Sinis with a kitesurfing spot suitable for all levels, even for experts during big storms. This spot is excellent when Mistral winds are about 12/18 knots. During the summer months the water is often flat and perfect for freestyle. Also, depending on the intensity of the wind, wave heights can reach about one meter. When a Mistral storm begins it’s possible to practice in the early hours of the storm as the sea starts to swell. Later on the waves tend to become damaged, which creates an annoying surf.
Mare Morto
In the same San Giovanni di Sinis area is Mare Morto, a spot that’s good for all skill levels and especially good for learning. Winds are from the south including the Levante and Scirocco. The sea bed is sandy.
Torre Grande – Marina di Oristano
On the Gulf of Oristano slightly south-east from San Giovanni, lies Torre Grande – Marina di Oristano. This spot is similar to Mare Morto and also suitable for all levels.
Mari Ermi
To the north lies the beautiful beach of Mari Ermi. This is an excellent spot that includes the islet of Porto Suedda, a rocky but non-dangerous break that is used as a starting reference point, and can have waves of three meters when the Mistral really lets loose. In the first hours of these storms it’s possible to find flat water for freestyle enthusiasts.
Putzu Idu
A few kilometers further north from Mari Ermi one arrives at Putzu Idu marina di San Vero Milis. This spot is suitable for all levels and has a south-west wind, left break, side-on. The break is a left sandy one of about 50/80 cm along the beach. The most experienced can arrive at the bay of Mandriola (minicapo) and surf on one or two meter high waves, which break right.
Capo Mannu
For the super experts there is Capo Mannu, with waves (side-on) that reach five meters on days when large storms are created by the North West Mistral.
Sa Rocca Tunda
Over the cape promontory is the spot of Sa Rocca Tunda, which is suitable for all levels. It also has a sandy break with winds from the North-Northeast. On days with large storms waves can reach two meters.
In short, the Sinis is an real paradise for kitesurfers!
Thanks to the collaboration of professional instructors, Offseasonvibes offers our guests specific and personalized courses to learn how to practice kitesurfing, obviously with equipment included. In the months of April / June until September / October, the mistral wind is often generated with an intensity of 10/12 and up to 18 knots. These winds create ideal kitesurfing conditions especially in San Giovanni di Sinis on the Gulf of Oristano-Mare Morto where courses are held. All courses are conducted with the aid of a dinghy from where an instructor will be in radio contact with a student. Wave lessons, on the other hand, are conducted along the Sinis coast from San Giovanni to the Marina of San Vero Milis – Sa Rocca Tunda, and depend on the type of wave available as well as the skill level of the student.
For the more experienced there are also options for trips out to sea, which arrive at ideal kitesurfing spots.
